Community Rallies to Save Historic Elm Tree
In a heartwarming display of unity, residents of Maplewood have come together to save a historic elm tree from being cut down.
The majestic tree, believed to be over 200 years old, stands at the center of Lincoln Park and has long been a beloved local landmark. The town council had scheduled its removal due to safety concerns, sparking an outcry from the community.
Last Saturday, over 300 locals gathered for a peaceful protest, carrying signs that read "Save Our Elm" and "History Lives Here." Among the crowd was 78-year-old Martha Greene, who shared memories of playing under the tree as a child. "This tree is part of our heritage," she said. "It connects us to our past and should be preserved for future generations."
In response to the overwhelming support, the council has agreed to conduct a thorough assessment to explore preservation options. Arborists and historians will collaborate to ensure the elm’s safety and longevity, giving the community hope that their cherished tree will continue to stand tall for years to come.
