US senators propose sweeping FAA air safety reforms after fatal collision

WASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) - A group of sevenDemocratic senators on Thursday introduced sweeping air safetylegislation after a fatal collision between an Army helicopterand an American Airlines regional jet in January nearReagan Washington National Airport killed 67 people.

Lawmakers have questioned why the Federal AviationAdministration failed to act for years to address close callsinvolving helicopters near Reagan. The legislation would requirea review of helicopter and passenger operations at majorairports, mandate new FAA safety reviews after fatal passengerairline accidents and require the use of use ADS-B, an advancedaircraft-tracking technology.(Reporting by David Shepardson; Editing by Leslie Adler)
